Burning Man Clean up Plan

Inspiration Island props are all bolted and tied together requiring moderately simple assembly. The props will be unbolted, disassembled and packed in the trucks on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, the Mind Shaft Society will pack all of our personal support gear back into the trucks and RVs. Cleaning up should be easy since the Mind Shaft Society will make no significant incursions into the playa and will not involve burning other than our cook fire in a preapproved steel fire pit. Playa damage should be limited to light scuff marks and shallow grooves from buried audio wire and power cable. We will fill in any scuff marks or grooves we make in the playa and smooth them with water. We will maintain an ash can for any cinders from our fire, as well as garbage receptacles at several locations. Our policy is to leave no trace by never having one in the first place. Camp members have already been advised of the need to eliminate objects or practices that might result in hard to clean up detritus. Mylar, for instance, has been banned. The Mind Shaft Society will bring four boxes of large garbage bags into which all loose debris left by the Mind Shaft Society and the visitors to the Mind Shaft will be placed on a daily basis. All of the loose materials that have blown into the Mind Shaft area and camp will also be picked up and placed into the large kitchen bags at the end of our temporary sojourn on the Playa. The large kitchen bags will be loaded into the equipment truck for disposal at the San Francisco Recycling Center across from Candlestick Park upon our return home. All of the large art debris that the Mind Shaft Society brings to the Playa for the Mind Shaft installation will be repacked into the equipment truck and trucked out of the desert back to San Francisco. We will also bring a shovels and brooms to remove any oil spills from the RVs, trucks, and generators. We will fill and rake the small holes left in the Playa from any of the stakes we use to secure our structures from the wind. The Mind Shaft Society, led by Ms. Sylvia Wood and her canary, will crawl on our hands and knees picking up any small trace of debris left in our wake. We promise to remove any vestige of our meager existence... from the Playa with hopes of returning the following year.

INSPIRATION ISLAND

Inspiration Island features a giant flower garden, once used as ancient ritual site by Islander tribes. The garden flourishes around the island's volcano, which features a huge painting of a native god. At the base of the volcano is a recently excavated Mind Shaft, occupied by a giant octopus. Once worshipped as an oracle by the Islanders, this remarkable creature is still alive, and can inspire modern visitors as it did in ancient times.

Burning Man visitors will be invited to submit questions to the oracle, as well as help solve other people's questions, in an age-old Inspiration Ritual. The results will be posted in our Big Book of Inspirations. A Little Book of Inspirations will also be emailed to all participants and published on the web in fall 2002.

THE MIND SHAFT SOCIETY

The Mind Shaft Society is pleased to share its findings from Inspiration Island, which reveals in full detail the remarkable story of the island's advanced civilization. Ancient artifacts recently unearthed suggest the Islanders had developed a powerful evolutionary ritual, held in their Earthly Garden of Delights. The Mind Shaft Society has restored this sacred site so that Burning Man visitors may benefit from its inspirational power.

Last year, our Burning Man Camp featured an abandoned Mind Shaft where participants were invited to undo bad ideas from their past. Over a thousand people wrote up and expiated past mistakes, which were posted in our Big Book of Bad Ideas. The Mind Shaft featured the giant skeleton of Mr. Bones, a greedy gold minor who paid with his life for his bad ideas. Our Little Book of Bad Ideas is posted online at:
http://www.handtap.com/art/badideas.htm

The Mind Shaft Society is an unprofessional anthropological association devoted to the study of consensual hallucination rituals. Distinguished members include Art Police founder "Are We Really", Senior Anthropologist Dr. Fabio Florio, Chief Gardener Matisse Enzer, Dr. Howard Rheingold and other Bay Area media juggernauts.

INSPIRATION RITUAL

Everyone is invited to join the Inspiration Ritual in the Mind Shaft. There, you can consult the Octopus Oracle to receive inspiration, as well as inspire others.

Visitors will write their burning questions on blank Inspiration Cards, which will then be filled with inspired responses from other participants. The results will be posted in our Big Book of Inspirations (a Little Book of Inspirations will also be emailed to all participants and posted on the web in fall 2002).

To join the Inspiration Ritual, simply follow these 4 easy steps:

Step 1: Write your Question
Pick a blank Inspiration Card, and write your burning question in the top part of the form (include your email address to receive a digital copy of the Book of Inspirations).

Step 2: Post your Question
Show your Inspiration Card to the Oracle. Then clip it to one of the lines hanging from the ceiling. The Mind Shaft's great spirits will soon provide the inspiration you seek.

Step 3: Solve a Question
In return for his advice, the Oracle wishes you to help him solve someone else's question. Check the hanging lines to read other people's unsolved questions. Pick one that inspires you. Write down your inspiration in the bottom part of the card.

Step 4: Post your Solution
Show your solved Inspiration Card to the Oracle and ring the bell. Then drop the card in the solutions box. The Oracle will review it and a Mind Shaft attendant will post the final results in the Book of Inspirations. Enjoy the uplifting feeling of shared wisdom.
